5 Tips to Prevent Death from Taxes

| by Larissa Tater, under Wellness

Stress and taxes are legitimately linked, so much so that researchers have found a 6% increase in fatal auto accidents on the day federal taxes are due. The culprit? Stress.

Try these five tips to reduce your stress before you hit the road on Tax Day.

  1. Exercise. Throw on your shoes and take a walk or a jog around the block. If you have pets or kids, spend some time outside with them to clear your head and get your mind off of financial worries.
  2. Breathe. Take in deep breaths and slowly let them out. Breathing in for six counts, holding for one, and exhaling for six counts will help you regulate your breathing and steady your heart rate.
  3. Quietly repeat your favorite mantra. Mantras help quiet your mind, which moves your thoughts from a negative to a naturally positive place. Focus on a single thought or phrase that does not bring about strong emotions. Need a little help? Try “I am grateful for this time to practice peace."
  4. Hang out with friends. Laughter is a great way to reduce stress. Get some of your favorite friends together to celebrate the fact that you did not procrastinate this year! Or did you…?
  5. See the big picture. At the end of the day, understand that there are more interesting things that you could be doing than worrying about your taxes. If it makes you feel better, tomorrow, it will all be over.
