Water and Weight Loss

Impossible as it may seem, drinking water may be the single most important catalyst in losing weight and keeping it off.  Although most of us take it for granted, water may be the only true magic potion for permanent weight loss.  Water naturally suppresses the appetite and helps the body metabolize stored fat.  Studies have shown that a decrease in water intake will cause fat deposits to increase, while an increase in water intake can actually reduce fat deposits (Donald S. Robertson, M.D.

www.weight-control.com).  How is this possible?  The kidneys cannot function properly without enough water.  When they don’t work to capacity, some of their load is dumped onto the liver.  One of the liver’s primary functions is to metabolize stored fat into useable energy for the body.  But if the liver has to do some of the kidney’s work, it can’t operate at full throttle.  As a result, it burns less fat, with more fat remaining stored in the body causing weight loss to stop.  Since we know that water is the key to burning fat it makes sense that a larger person would need to drink more water per day than a thinner one.  Water also helps the body to rid itself of waste and toxins.  This is especially important during weight loss where the body has more waste to get rid of (all of the metabolized fat).

How much water is enough?  On the average, a person should drink 6 to 8 glasses per day or 1/2 your body weight (in ounces)—whichever is more.  Also, it’s best to drink a small amount many times

throughout the day rather than “guzzling” the water all at one time.  Bottom line: drinking adequate amounts of water will aid the body in burning stored fat thereby shedding pounds while firming and toning the skin in the process.
